In between the visual world and the auditory one lies another world entirely, one often filled with questions that are difficult to ask and even more difficult to answer. Yet within that same space exists an often unseen power shaped by the Deaf community itself. Hearing children of Deaf adults (CODAs) are frequently considered “third culture kids,” growing up between two societies, cultures, and languages while often struggling with identity, belonging, advocacy boundaries, and community expectations.
Where does a CODA truly belong when they may feel caught between both worlds? How can CODAs use their unique experiences, access, and privilege to work alongside Deaf individuals in ways that empower and amplify Deaf voices rather than overshadow them? Through personal experiences, collaborative discussion, and both CODA and Deaf perspectives, presenters Genaere Long and Hector Castillo Beltran will explore these complex topics while encouraging participants to reflect on identity, allyship, cultural responsibility, and advocacy.
This empowering workshop is designed to strengthen confidence within CODA identity, deepen understanding of the relationship between CODAs and the Deaf community, and provide participants with practical insight into how meaningful collaboration can create positive change within the larger society.
