Interpreting And Co-Interpreting In Legal Settings

0.6 CEUs, PS, Legal

This workshop opens with the court environment, decorum protocols, and how to clearly define your role/boundaries as legal interpreters. Your role depends on whether you are court interpreter (interpreting for prosecutor) or table interpreter (interpreting for defendant). These roles cannot be interchangeable. What are boundaries for legal interpreters? Can you ask questions to clarify or elicit answers from Deaf clients? Can/how do you request access to exhibits? Do we need to be videotaped in our legal work? How do we develop working relationship with the legal system? The next part of this workshop focuses on co-interpreting or team interpreting (Hearing or Deaf teams) from step one. What are possible co-interpreting processes we can utilize? Simultaneous interpreting? Or Consecutive Interpreting? What adjustments is necessary for investigation with Deaf witness? Interrogation of Deaf person of interest? Deaf arrestee? Video recording which interpreter? Co-interpreting means equal roles and responsibilities for the interpretation. So we would look at how to work together as one cohesive team. What if one interpreter has more experience than teammate? How do you share the knowledge equally, especially legal knowledge?
