More Or Less: Explicitation And Implicitation In Interpreting

The differences between the discourse patterns of ASL and English in addition to the high context culture of American Deaf culture and low context nature of American English culture have implications for sign language interpreters. In order to successfully provide source and target message equivalency, interpreters must mediate between linguistic and cultural differences. Explicitation is defined as the shift in translation from what is implicit in the source text to what is explicit in the target text (Murtisari, 2011). In the field of sign language interpreting we use the term expansions. Participants in this workshop will learn the seven expansion features as defined by Lawrence, in addition to the adapted compression features as defined by Finton & Smith. Translation and interpreting skill development practice will be an integral part of this workshop.

Daniel Maffia

Currently I work as a program director and senior lecturer for my alma mater (RIT/NTID) in the Department of American Sign Language & Interpreter Education. Prior to being a lecturer I served as a staff interpreter at RIT on the College of Liberal Arts Core Team. In addition to being a full time lecturer training future interpreters, I continue working as a practicing interpreter part time at Sorenson Communcation and Strong Memorial Hospital. In addition I have also taught as an adjunct professor at RIT/NTID's interpreter training program and Onondaga Community College. I have also had the privilege to work as a support staff person for the RID National Conference in 2009 and currently serve on the board of directors for our local RID affiliate chapter . I became a Nationally Certified interpreter with my NIC in March of 2010. Most recently I graduated with my Masters in Interpreting with an emphasis in teaching from Western Oregon University in 2014.. My research interests are focused on the Demand-Control Schema Decision Making model along with structured Supervision. I am a facilitator of supervision and facilitate supervision sessions both online and in person at Strong Memorial Hospital, RIT for both students and staff, out in the community, and for signed language interpreters in Austrailia. Besides interpreting I enjoy playing tennis and am a certified Turbo Kick and Insanity instructor as well as being a certified Group Fitness through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). In addition I am a home based fitness business owner helping other's get FIT and healthy as well as helping those who want to start their own business promoting fitness!
