Translating Into ASL: Mastering The Art Beyond Interpretation

This interactive workshop is designed for individuals who want to strengthen their skills in translating written English into American Sign Language (ASL). Unlike interpreting, ASL translation allows time for analysis, restructuring, and refinement to produce a clear, natural, and culturally accurate signed product. Participants will learn how to deeply understand source material, apply ASL grammar and syntax, analyze message intent, and adapt content to fit the linguistic and cultural norms of the Deaf community. Through hands-on activities, peer feedback, and guided practice, attendees will leave with a solid understanding of the translation process and how to apply it effectively in real-world settings.

Tim Mallory

Timothy Mallory is from the New England area and is a CODA of two Deaf parents, who attended the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, CT. Tim is RID certified (CI) and has been interpreting and teaching ASL for about 30 years. He specializes in interpreting in the VRS/VRI world as well as educational settings. Additionally for the past 15 years his work includes translation from text to ASL. He currently lives in the New York city area, however he is a Boston sports fan for life. Much of Tim’s work in translation has led to the development of a skillset that can be applied to the interpreting process. His aim is that skills learned will enable interpreters to perform the work necessary without expending all of their energy. The course he teaches will focus on techniques that will help you to interpret with more confidence and ease.
