Certified Interpreter

Romy O'Callaghan

I am an Irish Sign Language/English Interpreter, and an International Sign/English interpreter. I completed my degree in Deaf Studies in Trinity College Dublin (TCD), with a focus on Irish Sign Language (ISL) Interpretation. Throughout my time in Trinity College Dublin I gained the skills and competencies to interpret to and from English to ISL. On completing my degree, I was accepted for an internship under MEP Helga Stevens, wherein I began to develop my International Sign. In coordinating and contacting many National Associations of the Deaf, I developed and honed my International Sign to establish and maintain communication between me and the deaf interlocutor. Once my internship came to an end, I was offered a position in the European Union of the Deaf as a Sign Language interpreter and Administration Officer, where I had the opportunity to further my International Sign skills, my Interpreting skills and broaden my horizons by traveling across Europe. I now work as a staff interpreter at Overseas interpreting. With the skills I acquired from my European experience, I am further developing my skill as a full time interpreter. I work from grassroots level all the way up to high level political forums using ISL and IS. Whilst working as an interpreter, I am also developing and advocating for the rights of sign language interpreters, ensuring that we are not an afterthought. Rather, I am working towards the day wherein sign language interpreting is seen as a fully fledged profession, similar to that of spoken language interpreters.
