Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the current, inclusive diagnostic term for certain neurodevelopmental disorders which were previously categorized as distinct (e.g., Asperger Syndrome). The ASD diagnosis therefore covers a wide spectrum of symptomatology affecting social and communication abilities in particular. Mild to severe degrees of impairment may result. This presentation will offer a brief overview of ASD, followed by a two-part focus on what interpreters should know about interacting with deaf consumers with, or suspected of, ASD characteristics. Ms. Gordon will present research information regarding the diverse ways in which communication may be affected by ASD and provide guidance for receptive and expressive interpretation skills. Dr. Pollard will describe a recent evaluation he conducted of a deaf adult with an ASD history and how he collaborated with an ASD expert, who worked with interpreters, as she performed her portion of that evaluation. Resources for further learning and consumer consultation regarding ASD and the deaf population will be offered.
