So You Think You Can Dance in VRS-Round 1: Call Choreography

Interpreting in the Video Relay Service field is like a waltz in the park . . . or a breakdance headspin. The combinations of topics, environments, vocabulary, linguistic styles, and people present an almost endless variety of possibilities for each call. So, call-after-call, hour-by-hour, day-in and day-out how can a video interpreter maintain effectiveness and confidence? Throughout this interactive workshop a metaphorical perspective will be woven in along with practical information and breakout discussions to assist VI’s to find their rhythm. This will culminate in clearer concepts on choreographing calls with crisp communication.

Meet Your Presenter

NIC Master

Matthew Wheeler

Born in Massachusetts and raised in Florida, Matthew is a nationally Certified (NIC Master) interpreter. Being introduced to the deaf community and sign language as a child, has enabled him to see the variety that exists within the culture, communication styles, and language itself. He has a degree in digital graphic design and found the creative parallels in art concepts and ASL interpretation to be rewarding and he began interpreting professionally in 2006. Since then he has interpreted in a variety of settings including legal, courtroom, conference, medical, college/university, and educational. Matthew has extensive experience in public speaking, both in English and ASL, as well as, comprehensive training and work experience in English to ASL translation. Since 2007 he has interpreted in the video relay service (VRS) field and has trained and mentored many video interpreters. When he is “unplugged” from VRS he enjoys time with his wife and two daughters.
