The Certificate in Educational Interpreting (CEI)

0.3 CEUs, PS

An Examination into Specialized Professional Development for ASL-English Interpreters Working in Educational Settings This presentation examines educational interpreters' perspectives on professional development geared toward them. The Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf (RIT/NTID) launched the Certificate in Educational Interpreting (CEI) in the fall of 2021. This exclusively online program provides specialized professional development for interpreters working in K-12 and postsecondary educational settings. This presentation includes findings from members of the certificate's inaugural year from pre and post-survey data. The findings confirm the need for support and continued specialized training for interpreters in educational settings. The results also suggest there is still confusion in mainstream programs about the interpreter's role, responsibilities in the classroom, and how to work with interpreters. Interpreters are charged with explaining and educating classroom participants about their roles. This presentation brings to light several issues educational interpreters face and includes considerations and recommendations for interpreters in educational settings and the interpreter education community.

Liked the focus on K-12 interpreting: importance of collaboration with other professionals, administration and DHH students. The importance of feedback: not being afraid of it or anxious. How to word feedback in turn with your colleagues. Setting up a plan from this time forward in collaborating with my team.
